FREDERICTON, N.B. — The Dalhousie Tigers secured a 1-0 victory over UNB on Sunday at the BMO Centre. Dalhousie's lone goal came in the first half, proving to be the game-winner as the defense held firm. The Dalhousie goalkeeper recorded six saves, preserving the shutout despite UNB's seven shots on goal.
The match between Dalhousie and UNB commenced with both teams actively seeking an early advantage. The Tigers made a strong offensive push, with Selena Lancaster taking two early shots saved by UNB's goalkeeper Breanna Habinski. Emily Toth, in goal for Dalhousie, matched this effort with several key saves, keeping UNB from capitalizing on their attacking plays, including a critical stop of Aurora Hughes-Goyett's shot.
Dalhousie broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Jordan Mansfield scored the first goal of the match, giving them a 1-0 lead. This goal followed a string of saves by Toth, ensuring the Tigers' defensive line held firm. As the half closed, they maintained their 1-0 lead, with both teams continuing to press but unable to alter the score before halftime.
The second half began with a firm defensive stance by Dalhousie, highlighted by goalkeeper Toth's saves in the 66th and 76th minutes against shots from Hughes-Goyett and Jillian Curtis, respectively. The Tigers managed to create an offensive opportunity with a shot by Arianna Rushenas in the 82nd minute, which was saved by Habinski. Despite several fouls and a yellow card on Paris Axam, Dalhousie maintained their composure to preserve their 1-0 lead as the match concluded.
Toth recorded six saves and posted a shutout in Dalhousie's recent match, contributing significantly to the team's 1-0 victory. Mansfield scored the game's only goal, which was also the game-winner, from two shots on target. Lancaster contributed offensively by registering two shots, both on goal.
The Tigers head next to Cape Breton on Sunday, October 5 to battle the Capers.
