FREDERICTON, N.B. — The UNB REDS defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 2-1 on Saturday at the BMO Centre. The Tigers outshot the Reds 15-4, with 13 of those on target, but the UNB goalkeeper recorded 12 saves to secure the win. Dalhousie took an early lead with a goal in the first half, but UNB responded with a goal in each half to claim victory.
The first half began with Dalhousie establishing a solid defensive presence, highlighted by Emily Toth's crucial saves against UNB's Lauren Clarke in the 12th and 16th minutes. Despite encountering several fouls, the Tigers maintained pressure, with Niamh Martin Manuel and Paris Axam both testing UNB's goalkeeper Breanna Habinski.
UNB broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute with a goal from Evana Eyubeh, assisted by Carolina Grzesniak, following a corner kick. Dalhousie responded decisively just before the half, with Elise Evans equalizing in the 44th minute off an assist from Jordan Mansfield. The half closed with the score level at 1-1.
The second half began with Dalhousie pushing for an equalizer, highlighted by early attempts from Sarah Giles and Evans, the latter striking the crossbar. Despite sustained pressure, including multiple saves by UNB's goalkeeper Habinski, the Reds extended their lead to 2-1 with a goal from Helen Langrehr in the 59th minute.
Dalhousie continued to apply pressure throughout the half, with shots from Axam, Jordan Camp, and Mansfield testing Habinski. The team generated several corner opportunities, particularly through Axam, but was unable to convert these chances into a tying goal. The half concluded with Dalhousie trailing UNB 2-1.
Evans scored one goal and took four shots, two of which were on target. Giles contributed with three shots, all on goal. Axam also made three shots, each on target. Mansfield provided an assist and had one shot on goal. Toth, in goal, made two saves, facing four shots in total.
The Tigers and REDS return to the field on Sunday at 1pm in Fredericton.
