The UNB REDS topped the TIgers 2-0 on Friday.
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Dalhousie fell to the University of New Brunswick (UNB) 2-0 on Friday night at Halifax Forum, with UNB scoring both goals on the power play in the third period.
The first period between Dalhousie and UNB began with a faceoff win for Dalhousie, setting a competitive tone. Despite an early penalty on Avery Holmes for boarding, Dalhousie's defense held strong during the REDS' power play, with Grace Beer making crucial saves on shots from Raine Murdoch and others. Dalhousie also managed several faceoff victories, maintaining pressure despite being outshot. Both teams had opportunities, but neither could capitalize, leaving the period scoreless at the break.
The second period featured strong defensive performances from both Dalhousie and the REDS, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Dalhousie had two opportunities on the power play due to penalties assessed to UNB's Keira Grant at 4:33 and Lauren Carter at 7:03 but failed to capitalize as the REDS' defense, and specifically goaltender Hannah LeClair, held firm. Beer was equally effective, stopping multiple shots from UNB attackers, including attempts by April Reiner and Katelyn Scott. The period was characterized by frequent faceoffs and missed attempts, ending without a change in the score.
UNB capitalized on their power play opportunities in the third period to secure a 2-0 victory over Dalhousie. Rylee Strohm opened the scoring at 4:28 with her first goal of the season, assisted by Avery Thurston and Hillary Wood, during a power play following Abby Larkin's slashing penalty. The REDS extended their lead to 2-0 at 14:26 when Thurston scored, assisted by Olivia Eustace and Payton Hargreaves, during another power play. Dalhousie had multiple attempts on goal but was unable to beat the REDS' goaltender, LeClair, who made several key saves throughout the period.
