Bain leads Tigers to win over REDS

FREDERICTON, N.B. — The Dalhousie Tigers secured a 1-0 victory over the UNB REDS on Saturday at BMO Centre. The match's lone goal came in the second half, while the Tigers' defense held the Varsity Reds scoreless, with their goalkeeper Astridge recording two saves to maintain a shutout. Both teams received one red card each, contributing to a tense atmosphere throughout the game.
The first half began with both teams probing for opportunities, but Dalhousie's defense remained solid. Goalkeeper Sinclair Astridge made critical saves, notably stopping attempts from UNB's Christopher Schmit and Kale Hunter at the 20th and 28th minutes, respectively. Despite several fouls and yellow cards issued to the Tigers, including to Eliia Abu Al-Shamlat, Farrell Johnson, and Savage, the team managed to maintain composure.
Dalhousie generated offensive momentum late in the half, with Bain delivering a shot on target in the 45th minute, although it was saved by UNB's Jensen Brown. A subsequent corner kick by Tolba marked the closing moments of the half. The half concluded with both teams scoreless, maintaining a 0-0 tie.
The second half began with a significant shift as Dalhousie faced a challenge when Savage received a red card at the 60-minute mark, reducing the team to ten players. Despite this setback, the Tigers maintained their composure and defensive stand against UNB's attacking efforts, including a wide shot following a corner kick in the 63rd minute.
In the closing stages, Dalhousie capitalized on a crucial opportunity when Bain converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute, breaking the deadlock and putting the Tigers ahead. The half ended with Dalhousie leading 1-0, maintaining their narrow advantage despite several disciplinary challenges and securing a hard-fought lead.
Bain scored the lone goal of the match, converting one of his two shots on target to secure the game-winning goal. Astridge recorded a shutout with two saves, facing two shots in 90 minutes of play. Savage received a red card, leaving the team a player down for part of the match.
The Tigers and REDS return to the field on Sunday at 3:30pm.
