Tigers fall to Axewomen in season opener
The Axewomen beat the Tigers 64=50 on Wednesday.
HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — Acadia University defeated Dalhousie University 64-50 on Wednesday at the Dalplex. Dalhousie's defense recorded five blocks and five steals, but it was not enough to overcome the Axewomen's 14-point fourth-quarter lead.
Dalhousie began the first quarter by gradually asserting control, overcoming an early four-point deficit to Acadia. Melina Collins and Madelyn White played pivotal roles, with White's three-pointer and subsequent layups helping to tie the score early in the quarter. Dalhousie capitalized on offensive rebounds and second-chance opportunities, with Cairo Henning contributing key assists to maintain momentum.
The home team extended their lead to four points midway through the quarter, driven by consistent scoring from White and Samantha Manieri. Despite the Axewomen's efforts to close the gap, Dalhousie's defensive rebounding and effective ball distribution kept them in front. The quarter concluded with Dalhousie leading 14-10.
The second quarter began with the Axewomen gaining momentum, taking an early lead with a series of successful plays. Dalhousie responded through defensive efforts, including a notable block by Henning, but struggled with turnovers which Acadia capitalized on.
As the quarter progressed, Dalhousie's offense found strides with contributions from Victoria Fournier and Manieri, keeping the score within reach. Despite these efforts, Acadia maintained pressure, extending their lead. The quarter concluded with Dalhousie trailing, as the Axewomen outscored them 21-13, leading to a 31-27 score at the half.
Dalhousie began the third quarter with defensive vigor as Karina Sarai recorded a key block, which was followed by White converting a fast-break layup to tighten the score. Henning added momentum with a crucial three-pointer off a steal, momentarily cutting Acadia's lead. However, Dalhousie struggled to maintain offensive consistency, as the Axewomen widened the gap through steady scoring, including free throws and points in the paint.
Despite White and Collins contributing with a late three-pointer assisted by Henning, Dalhousie could not overcome Acadia's maintained lead. The quarter concluded with Dalhousie trailing 45-35, as the Axewomen capitalized on free throws and defensive rebounds to hold their advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Dalhousie attempted to close the gap with an early layup from Janessa Flewelling, assisted by Henning. White contributed with a three-pointer, narrowing Acadia's lead. Despite these efforts, the Axewomen's defense capitalized on turnovers, extending their advantage with key free throws and layups.
Collins made significant contributions with back-to-back three-pointers, keeping Dalhousie within striking distance. However, Acadia maintained their momentum and lead, highlighted by a three-pointer from Rachel Veale. As the quarter came to a close, Dalhousie struggled to convert on key possessions, finishing the quarter with a 64-50 deficit.
White led with 24 points and added nine rebounds, showcasing her efficiency with 10 field goals made on 18 attempts. Collins contributed 11 points, hitting three three-pointers and collecting nine rebounds. Henning provided defensive strength with two blocks and two steals, while also dishing out seven assists. Sarai reinforced the defense with two blocks, complementing her four rebounds.
The Tigers hit the road to Wolfville on Saturday for a re-match with Acadia.
