UNB wins final regular season game over Tigers

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds closed out their 2019-20 Atlantic University Sport regular season with a convincing 79-50 win over the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday night. 

Marley Curwin (Halifax, NS) had seven points and six rebounds in the win to earn the Subway Player of the Game award. 

Dalhousie finishes the season in seventh place with the loss, while the Reds, with the win, overtake the Cape Breton Capers for fourth place in the AUS, making them the home team for their quarter-final playoff match-up, Friday afternoon. 

"I definitely think that we have improved a lot through the season," said Curwin. "We have been focused on treating every game like it's a playoff game, and just trying to be more intense." 

The Reds would command the play early, limiting the Tigers to a small amount of inside play to lead 23-10 after the opening quarter. 

Dal would get a few more shots to fall and keep a closer pace in the second, but still trailed the Reds 40-21 at half-time. 

The Reds would open the game up in the third quarter, putting the game further out of reach for the Tigers with a 60-30 lead heading to the fourth. 

Dalhousie made up little ground in the fourth as UNB cruised to a 79-50 win. 

After the game the Reds honoured their four graduating players Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, ON), Eva Tumwine (Fredericton, NB), Grace Simpson (Fredericton, NB) and Katie Daley (Hanwell, NB). 

"They have all had such a positive impact on our team on and off the court," said Curwin. 

Dodig led the Reds with 14 points and five assists, while Daley added 10 points. 

Bridget McSwiggan (Ottawa, ON) led the Tigers with 10 points and three rebounds, while Chelsea Slawter-Wright (Dartmouth, NS) had eight points and five assists. 

The Reds and Capers tip-off Friday at 1:00pm, in the first of the AUS quarter-final games, part of the AUS Championships, at the Scotiabank Centre, in Halifax.
