Tigers improve to 4-2 with 64-43 win over struggling Axewomen

WOLFVILLE N.S. - In their second night of the CIS Shoot for the Cure weekend, the Acadia Axewomen faced the Dalhousie Tigers at War Memorial Gymnasium in a four-point matchup.

The Tigers opened up on a 16-0 run and never looked back by defeating the Axewomen 64-43. 

The Tigers were red hot to start the game and took a commanding 16-0 lead until Acadia forward Emily Macleod scored the Axewomens' first bucket with 2:34 remaining in the quarter.

Dalhousie led 20-5 at the end of the first. Courtney Thompson paced the Tigers with 11 points in the opening frame alone. Thompson was the Subway player of the Game for Dalhousie, finishing with 24 points and seven rebounds.

Acadia tried to chipped away at the 15 point deficit in the second quarter behind six points from Janelle Vanhie, but trailed 18-35 entering the intermission. It would only get tougher for the Axewomen as Dalhousie stretched their lead to 30 and would take a 28-point advantage into the final frame of action.

Despite another dominant performance from Acadia's Subway Player of the Game, Alexandra Berry with 12 points and eight rebounds, the Axewomen could not find a solution for a well-rounded Tigers team and fell 64-43.

Second year Axewoman, Emily MacLeod, chipped in seven points and four boards, while Vanhie finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists.

Tiger Tessa Stammberger added ten points and nine rebounds and teammate Diedre Alexander added nine points off the bench on 4-6 shooting.

The Tigers pulled together 14 points off of turnovers and added 15 points on second chances.

Acadia will hope to get their first win this Thursday night as they host Saint Mary's Huskies to conclude their schedule before the Winter Holiday Break, while Dalhousie does not play again before the break and will travel to PEI to take on the Panthers January 9^th.
