First Year Feature: David Babalola
We'd like to introduce you to first year runner, David Babalola
The transition from high school to university athletics is signifigant. We're highlighting first year athletes from all varsity teams this season who are on the path to achieving success here at Dalhousie University.
This week, we would like to introduce David Babalola, a member of the track and field team. Hailing from Dartmouth, N.S., David is studying Computer Science.
How did you start or get into track and field?
I ran track for the first time when I was 6 years old, and my mom had signed me up for a school competition. I had ran a couple more times after that, till I started taking it seriously in my Senior Year of high school.
Did you play any other sports growing up?
Yes, I played football and basketball in high school, and I played club soccer growing up as well.
Who is somebody in the track and field community you admired growing up and why?
Usain Bolt is the fastest man alive, and that's something most track and field athlete one to achieve one day, Usain is someone who has been through the Highs and downs that athletes will face, but he kept true to his dream of wanting to be the fastest man alive, and he achieved it.
What is the most memorable moment in your career so far?
The most memorable moment of my career so far would be when I represented Nova Scotia at the Summer Canada Games in 2025.
What made you choose Dalhousie University?
Dalhousie University just made sense for me, in terms of me wanting to stay close to home; the school has a great track program and coaches. Academically, Dal has the best computer science program around me, and ever since I went on my recruitment visit, I felt was a great fit for me.
Did any of your family members attend Dalhousie University? How has the transition from high school sports to university sports been for you so far?
Yes, I have an older brother. Praise Babalola is in his third year and is also on the Dal Track and Field team
How has the transition from high school sports to university sports been for you so far?
The transition from High school to university has been challenging for sure, but it has taught me the importance of time management and not procrastinating. I've met some great friends along the way, who have made the transition easier.
How do you balance academics and sports?
Being organized and not procrastinating is how I balance academics and sports. Trying to have my day planned, knowing where and when I need to be at certain times. Most importantly, not leaving assignments to the deadline is what I find key to making sure I'm not feeling stressed or overwhelmed.
What are some of your interests outside of sports?
I love travelling and exploring the world and trying different foods. I am also a huge fan of anything that has to do with airplanes.
Any pre-event superstitions/routines?
Yes, I have to tie the shoelaces of my spikes at least 5 times before I race.
Any hidden talents?
I can play the drums.

Fried rice.
