(Halifax, N.S.) – The Dalhousie Tigers defeated the UNB Reds 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-16) in the first match of the best two of three 2020 Subway AUS Semifinal Series presented by Keep it Social 3-0 Thursday night at Dalplex.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead in the first, up by as many as six. The Reds found their footing soon after and were up 16-13 at the technical time out, thanks in large part to a seven-point service run by Julia Demert (Egbert, Ont.) UNB continued to increase their lead until Victoria Haworth (Waverley, N.S.) led the Tigers from the service line to tie the game up at 24-24. The Tigers didn't stop there and closed out the first set 26-24.
Dalhousie started off the second set in the same fashion as the first, up 7-1 forcing UNB to take an early time out. The Reds came out of the time out re-energized and won the next four points and eventually tied it up 13-13. The Tigers were the first to 16 points, up 16-15 at the technical time out. Courtney Baker (Bridgewater, N.S.) led the Tigers on a five-point service run that included two aces to increase the Tigers lead 22-16 and an eventual 25-17 second set win.
The Tigers were off to an early lead again in the third with strong serving from Micaela Sabean (Bridgewater, N.S.) forcing UNB to take a time out down 7-1. The Reds worked hard to close the gap after the time out and got within two points. Dalhousie however continued to press and won the third and final set 25-16.
Dalhousie's Julie Moore (Halifax, N.S.) had a match-high 11 kills and added 16 digs. Baker earned Subway Player of the Game honours, recording 30 assists, nine digs, six aces and two blocks. Victoria Turcot (Halifax, N.S.) added eight kills and nine digs.
Victoria Eadle (Gallagher Ridge, N.B.) led the Reds with nine kills and 11 digs. Kristen Burns (Mississauga, Ont.) had eight kills and seven digs, while Adora Rooyakkers had a match-high 18 digs.
Both teams will meet again tomorrow night for the second match of the best of three series. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at Dalplex and will be broadcast on AUStv.ca
